Maheshwari Weaves
The beautiful conception of the Maheshwari saree dates back to 18th century Madhya Pradesh. These sarees were first found and produced in the town of Maheshwar, hence the name. The interesting legend behind these sarees is of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar who ordered various craftsman and artisans from Malwa and Surat. In fact, it was the queen herself who designed the first saree. Following this, Maheshwari sarees became extremely popular in and around Madhya Pradesh. Maheshwari Saree is a cotton and pure silk fabric woven with zari or brocade in varied designs. These designs include stripes, checks and floral borders.
Kanjeevaram Saree
These sarees are woven from pure mulberry silk thread. The pure mulberry silk and the Zari used in the making of Kanchipuram saris comes from South India.To weave a Kanchipuram sari three shuttles are used. While the weaver works on the right side, his aide works on the left side shuttle. The border colour and design are usually quite different from the body. If the mundhi (the hanging end of the sari) has to be woven in a different shade, it is first separately woven and then delicately joined to the Sari.
Banarasi Saree
A Banarasi sarees are made in Varanasi, an ancient city which is also called Banaras. The saris are among the finest sarees in India and are known for their gold and silver Zari Work.
Their special characteristics intricate intertwining floral and foliate motifs, kalga and bel, a string of upright leaves called jhallar at the outer, edge of border is a characteristic of these saris. Other features are gold work, compact weaving, figures with small details, metallic visual effects, pallus.
Depending on the intricacy of its designs and patterns, a sari can take from 15 days to a month and sometimes up to six months to complete.
